SLCC students are conducting their own geologic field-based research projects through the Geo 2350 Field Studies class. Research projects are ongoing, which means that we need NEW students to pick up where the other students left off. In addition, new students work with faculty to develop their own research project and go out into the field to collect data. Some field samples are analyzed in the field and others require some preparation in the lab.
SLCC's geology lab has access the ability to analyze for heavy metals in soil; water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, acidity, total dissolved solids, and temperature; and stream discharge rates. |

Water QualityThe water quality meters measure dissolved oxygen, acidity, total dissolved solids, and temperature; and stream discharge rates. These are common indicators of the degree of "impairment" for a river.

GPS and GISStudents map their sample locations using survey-grade global positioning system (GPS) units and map their results in a geographic information system (GIS). GIS is technical computer mapping software, is a highly sought after skill in industry, and has many applications in geology and geography.
